The Hobbit games

There is more fun to be had with the Hobbit than just reading the book or listening to The Hobbit audiobook. If you want to explore the world of The Hobbit further in a fun way, you could try out one of several The Hobbit games.

Although The Hobbit has been around since the 1950′s, there hasn’t always been a lot of merchandise. With the release of the first of three The Hobbit movies in 2012, this has changed.
As with every major movie, the coming of these Middle-Earth blockbusters has caused a rise in related The Hobbit products. One particularly popular category is games. Let’s have a look at what kind of The Hobbit games there are.

The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-Earth

The Hobbit Kingdoms of Middle Earth

Our first suggestion is a free multiplayer strategy game for the iPhone and iPad. In The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-Earth, you build your own empire and fight battles over the power in Middle-Earth.

You get to choose between two rivaling powers: the Dwarves and the Elves. All empires are controlled by real players, but everyone can be attacked by the goblins of the Misty Mountains. Once you have picked your side, you have seven days in which you can not be attacked by other players. This way new players also get a chance to build their power.

After this, you continue to expand your empire. The game is not just about fighting, because you need to collect resources and build houses in order for your empire to survive and grow.
You can make your own kingdom stronger by forming fellowships with other players. This won’t be difficult, because the public chat function in this game is filled with many players who are also looking for allies.

The Hobbit: Kingdoms of Middle-Earth is a very popular game. There are many things to do at any point, but it is also possible to manage your empire easily on the go. The best part is that you can play this game for free.

The official The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Adventure board game

The Hobbit board game

The first of the three movies that has been released is The Hobbit: An Unexpected journey. With its release comes the official board game for 2 to 15 players, which has the same title as the movie.

In the game players take up the roles of the characters from the movie. Your goal is to get Bilbo’s company of thirteen dwarves up to the Eagle Eyrie space. You lose if anyone in your company dies before you are able to do so. If the final destination of the game is reached, the player with the most Good Points wins.

There are 15 characters in the game, and all have a character card which displays their strengths and weaknesses. All characters are moved around the board by throwing dice, even those characters that are not chosen by anyone playing.

In the game you will encounter event card spaces. If you land here, take an event card that matches the color of the space. An event might be extra wisdom points, extra spaces to move forward or a riddle that you have to solve.

There are also enemy token spaces. If you land on any space that touches such a token, you have to turn it around and do battle with the enemy card that matches the token. You use the dice to do battle. The higher the number, the more chance you have to beat your opponent. You can also try to run away.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Adventure board game is fun because you get to play with all the major characters from the movie. It takes some time to complete the game, and everytime you play the event cards and battles create a different course of events.
This game is fun for all ages, although the very youngest might have some problems with following all the rules.

LEGO The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit LEGO memory game

Another game that came with the launch of the first movie of the Hobbit trilogy is LEGO The Hobbit, An Unexpected Journey. The dwarves are lost in Hobbiton, and it is up to the players to find them again.

This game actually consists of two parts. First you will have to build the playing board, which is made up of traditional LEGO pieces. When this board is finished, you will be able to play the game on it. The game itself is a variation on the familiar Memory, in which you have to find pairs of pictures that are turned upside down.

To keep things interesting, the board can be changed into three shapes. The normal one shown on the box, a rectangular one or an L-shaped board. You can play with up to four people, using the characters Gandalf the Grey, Kili the Dwarf, Fili the Dwarf and Dwalin the Dwarf.

Creating the board will take some time, so keep that in mind before deciding if you will get this game or not. Kids will most likely love the building element.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (100% Plastic) 3D Playing Cards

The Hobbit 3D card game

This is the official movie deck of playing cards. The deck features 54 playing cards, including two jokers (which is Gollum in this case). Basically this is just a deck of cards, but there are certainly some things that turn this product into something special.

The cards are in 3D, which is something you don’t see very often. The faces change as you tilt the cards, which is a pretty neat effect. They are made out of 100% plastic, which makes them bendable and washable. To finish everything, this set of cards comes with an embossed collector’s tin which features The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey logo.

All in all this is a rather nice looking and usable collector’s item for a friendly price.
