The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug launched in Berlin

‘The Desolation of Smaug’, the second part of the The Hobbit trilogy by director Peter Jackson, has been launched in Berlin. The movie follows ‘An Unexpected Journey’, the highly succesful first part of the movie trilogy, which was released in 2012.

Most of the movies big stars attended the premiere in person. Among those present were director Peter Jackson, Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins), Orlando Bloom (Legolas Greenleaf), Luke Evans (Bard) and Evangeline Lilly (Tauriel) as well as popular artist Ed Sheeran, the composer of the movie’s soundtracks.

To accomodate the many fans of the books and movies, the premiere was streamed live via the web. Following the premiere, The movie is being released in cinemas all over the world. An Unexpected Journey grossed over $300 million last year, and this next installment is expected to achieve similar results.

What to expect in The Desolation of Smaug?

Fans of the book and audiobook know that The Hobbit is just one book, but extra material from the appendices of The Lord of the Rings trilogy has been used to turn it into a movie trilogy that will ultimately connect seamlessly with the LOTR trilogy.

As far as the main story of The Hobbit is concerned: about 100 pages of the book were covered in the first movie, and TDoS picks up where that movie ended. Bilbo and the dragons continue their quest to the lost dwarf empire of Erebor, which they seek to reclaim from the dragon Smaug. On their journey, they’ll meet with the skinchanger Beorn, and they’ll be faced with many dangers in Mirkwood Forest.

The most anticipated character in TDoS is Tauriel, played by ‘Lost’ star Evangeline Lilly. This character does not appear in the novel, but has been introduced due to a lack of female characters in the original story, and to be able to show more of the world of the Elves of Mirkwood Forest in the movies.
